Transponder Key Programming — How It Works, Pricing & What to Expect
We program transponder keys, key fobs, and push-to-start systems on-site.
Transponder Key Programming — What You Need to Know
Most vehicles manufactured after 1995 include a transponder chip embedded in the key. When you insert the key, the car's immobilizer system sends a radio frequency signal to the chip — if the chip responds with the correct rolling code, the engine starts. QA Locksmith Toronto Toronto's technicians carry advanced OBD-II programming tools to add, restore, or reprogram transponder keys for virtually any vehicle in the GTA.
Our Equipment & Expertise
Programming a transponder key is not something a hardware store can do. It requires professional-grade equipment that communicates with your car's ECU. Our Autel IM608 and Xhorse VVDI2 programmers cover over 98% of vehicles on Canadian roads, including models that require all keys lost (AKL) programming.
Professional Tools We Use
- Autel IM608 Pro
- Xhorse VVDI2
- Advanced OBD-II interface
- Key blade cutter
- EEPROM read/write adapter
How Our Key Programming Service Works
Vehicle Identification
Confirm make, model, year, and trim. Some vehicles require VIN-level identification to source the correct key blank.
Key Blank Sourcing
We select and cut the correct key blank from our mobile inventory.
OBD Connection
Connect to the vehicle's OBD-II port to communicate with the BCM/ECU.
Transponder Programming
We write the new key's transponder ID to the vehicle's immobilizer system. If all keys are lost, we perform AKL programming to erase old key data.
Ignition & Fob Test
The new key is tested in the ignition and all locks. Remote fob buttons are confirmed functional.
Common Key Programming Situations We Handle
- Purchased a used vehicle with only one key and want a spare
- New key cut but car won't start — transponder not programmed
- Dropped key in water — chip may be damaged
- All keys lost — need AKL programming
- Remote buttons stopped working — fob needs reprogramming
One call gets a certified technician dispatched to your location immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions — Transponder Key Programming
What's the difference between a transponder key and a regular key?
A transponder key has an RFID chip in the head that communicates with your car's immobilizer. Without a programmed chip, the car won't start even if the blade cuts correctly.
Can you program a key bought online?
Sometimes. Aftermarket key blanks vary in quality and compatibility. We prefer to supply and cut our own blanks to guarantee compatibility.
What is all-keys-lost (AKL) programming?
AKL is required when no working keys exist. We erase all existing key data from the ECU and program a fresh set. It typically costs more due to additional steps.
Can you program keys for all car brands?
We cover 98%+ of vehicles. A small set of highly encrypted European models may require dealer-level tools we don't carry, and we'll tell you upfront.
How long does programming take?
Standard programming takes 20–40 minutes. AKL programming can take 45–90 minutes depending on the vehicle.
