Locks are boring until they are not. Here is how we think about it on installs: grade first, then brand, then strike screws - because a fancy cylinder on a soft jamb is theatre.

Grades (the boring part that matters)
ANSI/BHMA: Grade 1 is toughest, Grade 2 middle, Grade 3 is what builders hide in the box. Outside doors in the GTA should be Grade 1 when you can swing it.
Tight budget
Look for a Grade 1 deadbolt from a big-box name with user-rekey features if you like DIY pin changes. Still miles better than a Grade 3 knob pretending to secure you.
Sweet spot
Common pro pick: Grade 1 deadbolt with a six-pin core, anti-drill plate, name you have heard of. We install a ton of them - easy to rekey later.

High security
Restricted keys, pick-resistant pins, more metal - cost jumps but copies need paperwork. Worth it for some people, overkill for others.
Smart locks
Get one that replaces the whole deadbolt, not a toy stuck on top. Wi-Fi eats batteries - plan for that. We help with mounting and basic app setup.
Frame and strike
Long screws into stud beat a shiny cylinder every time. Upgrade the strike plate when you upgrade the lock - or you still have a soft spot.
What we usually tell neighbours
Grade 1 deadbolt + good strike on every exterior door. Add high-security or smart only if you will actually use the features. We bring options on the truck.
